Keeping cool at Women’s Centre Waitakere

A new fridge seems like a simple thing but for Women’s Centre Waitakere it means they can offer families in their community much more food bank support.

The centre will now be able to purchase a new fridge thanks to a donation from Harcourts Blue Fern Realty via the Harcourts Foundation.

It’s been a long road to the new fridge for the staff at the charity organisation, after a donated fridge failed to work, and a loaned fridge was permanently fixed to freeze! Centre manager Angel Renjith says having a new working fridge will mean it can accept much more in the way of fresh food donations for the women it works with.

The aim of Women's Centre Waitakere is a registered non-profit organisation that works to empower women, promote family wellbeing and community belonging. It offers many services including counselling and workshops as well as general support and advice. It also works with organisations such as Kiwi Harvest and Fair food to offer food bank support.

“We get a lot of fresh vegetables and fruit, some from our official supports and some from community donations, which is fantastic, but it does mean having a good fridge is crucial,” Angel says.

“The food bank is used by women and families from across west Auckland. We have supplied more than 100 women in the past year with vegetables and other items.”
