Southland celebrated its anniversary day earlier this week, so let’s take a look at what makes the region a great place to live.

Embrace the south: Living in Southland means some of the country’s most stunning sights from the wonders of Fiordland to the south coast, The Catlins and Stewart Island are on your back doorstep. As well as tramping and cycling through the parks, forests, bush and coast there’s world class brown trout fishing in the Mataura River and kiwi-spotting on Stewart Island. If you want to cover more ground, drive the stunning Southern Scenic Route which winds around along the coast to Tuatapere, before cutting inland to Queenstown via Manapouri and Te Anau. From Invercargill try the coastal estuary boardwalk for fantastic views and birdlife, or wander along stunning Oreti Beach.

Surf the south: The wild coast across the bottom of New Zealand makes for some fantastic surfing locations. Out of Invercargill you could try Oreti Beach near the city, Beatons, near Riverton or Blue Cliffs, further past Tuatapere. But the whole coast is dotted with great breaks. Study in the south: If you’re thinking of studying Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) offers students a zero fees policy, making it an extremely cost effective place to train. In Southland SIT has campuses in Invercargill and Gore. For more information visit www.sit.ac.nz.

Taste the south: Southland is of course home to the world famous Bluff oyster but there are plenty of other local tasty treats to try. A good place to try is the Southern Farmers Market held at The Masonic Centre in Forth Street, Invercargill, every Sunday from 9.30am to 1.30pm. For something different you can learn all about the Hokonui region’s distilling history at Gore’s Hokonui Moonshine Museum. And, of course, don't forget to try that Southland specialty cheese rolls, known affectionately as "Southland sushi".
